Vol. 565 No. 2

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Finian McGrath

Ceist:

66 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that up to 5% of school children suffer from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. [8034/03]

The figure quoted by the Deputy regarding the prevalence of ADHD is borne out by recent international research. In these studies, the projected rates of prevalence vary from 3% to 5% and above. The research also indicates that approximately one third of such children go on to develop anti-social behaviour problems. Many of the children identified as having ADHD have associated difficulties in learning. My Department provides additional resources for schools in respect of children with special educational needs arising from ADHD.

When the National Council for Special Education is operational, one of its functions will be to conduct research into the prevalence and incidence of disabilities such as ADHD and to advise me on the range of appropriate responses.
