Vol. 565 No. 2

Written Answers. - Tax Evasion.

Róisín Shortall

Ceist:

78 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Finance the means by which members of the public may report rogue traders or tradesmen, whom they suspect are flouting tax laws, to the Revenue Commissioners; if a dedicated telephone line or unit exists for this purpose; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10587/03]

I am advised by the Revenue Commissioners that information about tax evasion can be given to the office's special inquiry branch which has responsibility for investigating these reports. This office is located at Tallaght Plaza Complex, Belgard Road, Tallaght, Dublin 24. In addition there are local inquiry units in each of the 13 provincial tax districts which are responsible for investigating reports in their own particular areas.

The office also has a confidential freephone service available for Customs and Excise reports. This service is particularly targeted at eliciting information in relation to drugs smuggling. Consideration is being to the extension of this freephone service for all taxes and duties in the context of the office's restructuring.

In addition to the above, information can be provided to any Revenue office listed in the revenue information services section of the telephone directory and on the Revenue website.
