Vol. 565 No. 3

Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

Paul Connaughton

Ceist:

149 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Finance his views on objections raised by farmers and other interested parties concerning the Cregclare certified drainage scheme; if the Office of Public Works is satisfied that properties situated downstream from the proposed drainage scheme will not be flooded to a greater degree than at present; if such heavier flooding does occur, whether farm and property owners will be compensated as a result of the new drainage scheme coming into operation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10943/03]

Following the public exhibition of the Aggard stream, Cregaclare, certified drainage scheme a significant number of observations were received expressing concern that these works would lead to flooding in the Dunkellin river area. A hydrological study prepared in relation to the scheme found that the increase in water levels would be minimal.

However, in order to address the concerns expressed Office of Public Works has agreed with Galway County Council to carry out a programme of maintenance works on the Dunkellin river, on behalf of the county council, from its confluence with the Aggard stream downstream towards Kilcolgan. I am satisfied that these maintenance works will greatly improve the flow regime in the Dunkellin and the question of increased flooding will not arise.
