Vol. 565 No. 3

Written Answers. - Departmental Expenditure.

Finian McGrath

Ceist:

299 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Health and Children if ?9.2 billion is spent on the health service; and the amount of that figure which is spent on salaries compared to front line services. [10748/03]

The Estimate for the Department of Health and Children in 2003 is more than €9,158 million. Included in this total is capital funding of €514 million and non-capital funding of €8,644 million. Non-capital funding is further broken down into non-pay funding of €2,620 million and a pay element of €6,024 million. Salary costs are an integral part of all services, including front line services. Based on an analysis undertaken by my Department, some 83% of all staff are employed in front line activities. Assuming pay grades are equally dispersed between staff in front line and non-front line services, the pay component in the provision of front line services is in the region of €5 billion.
