403 Dr. Cowley asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the type of sludge hub being put in place by Mayo County Council at Derrinumera landfill site, Newport; if this will be a centre for domestic sludge; the precautions being taken to protect the local environment; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Minister for the Environment and Local Government (Mr. Cullen):

Mayo County Council proposes under its sludge management plan to provide municipal waste water sludge treatment facilities at the existing landfill site at Derrinumera. The council has appointed consultants to prepare an environmental impact statement in respect of the proposal and to review the existing Environmental Protection Agency waste licence for the site.
