Vol. 566 No. 3

Written Answers. - Health Board Services.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

313 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Health and Children further to previous parliamentary questions and the commitment given by the SEHB to relocate the service offered at Crannog, Kilkenny, the number of people who now occupy the facility; the number of staff remaining; the hours of opening of the service; the new location from where the service will be offered; the intention of the SEHB in relation to the property still occupied; the reasons it is taking so long to deal with the issues; if the agreement with local residents will be fully honoured and expedited; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12669/03]

Responsibility for the provision of services at Crannog, Kilkenny, rests with the South-Eastern Health Board. While this facility can accommodate up to seven children, the board has advised that there are currently two residents occupying the facility at Crannog. Eleven whole-time staff are employed at the facility with relief staff brought in as required. The service operates on a 24-hour basis.

The service provided at Crannog will transfer to premises that have been recently purchased and adapted by the board at Tullamaine, Callan, County Kilkenny. The board has advised that this premises is now ready and the service will be relocated over the coming months. The service has not been relocated to date for the following reasons: renovation and adaptation of new facility at Tullamaine for health and safety reasons; negotiations with staff representatives in relation to the relocation of this service; and consideration of the recommendations of the review report in relation to all residential children's facilities.

The South-Eastern Health Board are in discussions with a voluntary agency with a view to this agency taking over the existing Crannog premises. The board has stated that they will advise local residents of the proposals for the alternative use of the facility at Crannog and the planned timetable.
