Vol. 566 No. 3

Written Answers. - Attacks on Taxi Drivers.

John Gormley

Ceist:

390 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the extent of the increase in attacks on taxi drivers since deregulation; the steps he intends to take to combat such attacks; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12830/03]

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that 30 offences, where the occupation of the victim is recorded as taxi driver on the PULSE system, were recorded between October 2000 and December 2002. These offences include assault, robbery from the person and harassment. Earlier comparison is problematic as it is not possible to state how many such offences took place prior to the introduction of the PULSE system. Such crimes are investigated in the normal way by the Garda Síochána.
