Vol. 566 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Charlie O'Connor

Ceist:

394 Mr. O'Connor asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has discussed with the Garda authorities the issue of the Garda station in Tallaght, Dublin 24; if consideration will include the radical argument that the current station could be demolished and the land sold for the benefit of the community and a new Garda station built to the west of the square and an office opened in the square; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the situation requires serious decisions; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12874/03]

I refer the Deputy to the reply I gave to Question No. 455 of 11 February 2003. As I stated then, my Department is in regular contact with the Garda authorities about the progress of various Garda station building projects, including the future development of Tallaght Garda station. Moreover, I indicated that the Office of Public Works is researching proposals, in consultation with South Dublin County Council, to maximise the development potential of the site of Tallaght Garda station and that any redevelopment of the site will include the provision of a new Garda station which will meet all current and future requirements of the Garda Síochána. I am not aware that consideration is being given to relocating the Garda station as stated by the Deputy. I understand from the Office of Public Works that the current position is that consultations with the county council are nearing conclusion and it is expected that a planning application for the development of the site will be made by end 2003.
