Written Answers. - Prisons Building Programme.

Seán Crowe

Ceist:

418 Mr. Crowe asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has received a report from the Prison Service regarding the proposed construction of a juvenile detention centre at Newlands Villa; if he has set in motion a consultation process in order that he can, as promised in reply to Parliamentary Question No. 284 of 5 February 2003, take into account the views expressed by local residents, South Dublin County Council and local representatives; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13002/03]

Having considered a report by the Commissioners of Public Works and the recommendations made and having conferred with the director general of the Irish Prison Service, I have recently decided that the proposed development at Newlands Villa, Naas Road, Clondalkin, Dublin 22, will not now proceed.

In reaching this decision, I also gave careful consideration to the representations of local elected representatives and residents as well as the detailed objections received from South Dublin County Council. The identification of another site for the proposed juvenile detention facility is now being pursued in consultation with the director general of the Irish Prison Service and the Office of Public Works.
