Vol. 566 No. 3

Written Answers. - Juvenile Detention Centres.

Róisín Shortall

Ceist:

187 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has made a decision regarding plans for the provision of a new juvenile detention centre at Clondalkin, County Dublin; the type of prisoner it is proposed to hold at the centre; if his attention has been drawn to concerns expressed by local communities and public representatives at the proposal, in view of the fact that there are already two prisons in the area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12812/03]

Having considered a report by the Commissioners of Public Works and the recommendations made, I recently decided that the proposed development at Newlands Villa, Naas Road, Clondalkin, Dublin 22 will not proceed.

In reaching this decision I also gave careful consideration to the representations of local elected representatives and residents as well as the detailed objections received from South Dublin County Council. The identification of another site for the proposed juvenile detention facility is being pursued in consultation with the director general of the Irish Prison Service and the Office of Public Works.
