270 Mr. N. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will re-examine a school bus transport matter on the grounds that the child of persons (details supplied) in County Cork is attending the primary school in his catchment area. [13858/03]

In the case of amalgamations, pupils residing in a closed school area, may be deemed eligible for transport to the school of amalgamation only. Parish boundaries have no bearing on a pupil's transport entitlement under the terms of the primary school transport scheme.

The pupil to whom the Deputy refers lives in a closed school area and he is fully eligible for transport to the school of amalgamation only. My Department has been advised that there is no suitable transport available to that particular school for this pupil.

In the above circumstances, the pupil may be allowed concessionary fare-paying transport on the service to the school attended, without the agreement of the amalgamated school. In the event that the family hold a valid medical card the concessionary fare of €26.00 per term may be waived.
