Vol. 567 No. 1

Written Answers. - Sports Capital Programme.

Denis Naughten

Ceist:

279 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism if funding will be approved under the sports capital programme for St. Barry's GAA Club, County Roscommon; when he intends to make a decision on the application; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13340/03]

The sports capital programme, which is funded by the national lottery and administered by my Department, allocates funding to sporting and community organisations at local, regional and national level throughout the country. The programme is advertised on an annual basis.

The 2003 sports capital programme was advertised in the national newspapers on March 23 and 24 2003. The closing date for receipt of applications was April 25. In excess of 1,300 applications were received before the closing date, including one from the organisation in question. All applications are currently being evaluated against the programme's assessment criteria, which are outlined in the guidelines, terms and conditions of the programme. I intend to announce the grant allocations for the programme as soon as possible after the assessment process has been completed.

Pat Breen

Ceist:

280 Mr. P. Breen asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism if Ennis Town Council or Clare County Council has applied for funding from his Department for a synthetic 400 metre athletic track; the amount applied for; the date it was applied for; the estimated cost of the track; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13391/03]

A grant of €634,869 was allocated to the Lees Road-Drumcliffe sports project, towards the provision of playing pitches, under the 2000 sports capital programme. The application at that time also envisaged the construction of dressing rooms, a cross-country running track and a synthetic athletics track. Of the grant allocated, 95% has been drawn down to date by Ennis Town Council. Under the terms and conditions of the programme, the remaining 5% – in this case €31,743 – is retained pending the receipt of certification of completion of the defects liability period of the project. The 2003 sports capital programme was advertised in the national newspapers on March 23 and 24, 2003. The closing date for receipt of applications was April 25. In excess of 1,300 applications were received before the closing date. My Department has not received an application in 2003 from Ennis Town Council or Clare County Council for funding for a synthetic 400 metre athletic track under the 2003 programme.

Paul Connaughton
