Vol. 567 No. 1

Written Answers. - Public Order Offences.

365.Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of complaints received by the gardaí at Mountjoy Garda station, Dublin 7, from local residents regarding the stoning of houses at Whitworth Road, Dublin 9, from construction works on the adjacent stretch of the Royal Canal; the action taken by the gardaí; and if any arrests were made. [13381/03]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that six complaints have been made to the Garda at Mountjoy station concerning criminal damage such as broken windows to property along Whitworth Road. To date, no persons have been made amenable for these crimes. The Garda believes that the stones were thrown by persons using the canal walk. It would appear that these were isolated incidents as no further such incidents have been reported.

On 6 May 2003, a meeting of the local residents was attended by Garda management and members from the community policing unit at Mountjoy Garda station. The incidents at Whitworth Road were raised and discussed in detail and I understand that the Garda will continue to give attention to the area concerned by way of foot and mobile patrols.
