Vol. 567 No. 1

Written Answers. - WTO Negotiations.

Denis Naughten

Ceist:

152 Mr. Naughten asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the need for a debate on Ireland's negotiating position within the EU on the forthcoming round of WTO negotiations; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [13822/03]

Within the last few weeks I formally requested such a debate on trade policy in the lead up to the fifth World Trade Organisation Ministerial meeting in Cancún, Mexico in September, 2003. The Chief Whip, Deputy Mary Hanafin, informed me on 17 April 2003 that unfortunately, due to the large amount of legislation that needs to be passed through the Oireachtas during the summer session, such a debate is not possible at this time.

The Joint Committee on Enterprise and Small Business will be considering these issues at its meeting of 11 June 2003.
