Vol. 568 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Pat Carey

Ceist:

282 Mr. Carey asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will review the request by a college (details supplied) in Dublin 11 for additional teaching hours to help complete the timetable needs of the school; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16803/03]

In accordance with the recommendations of two expert groups, an independent appeals committee was established this year to consider appeals by second level schools for additional teaching resources where particular problems arose in meeting curricular commitments within their normal staffing provision.

An appeal by the school in question was considered by the appeals committee in May of this year and the committee was satisfied that no further teaching allocation was warranted for the 2003-04 school year. The school authorities were notified of the decision of the appeals committee on 27 May 2003. As the appeals committee operated independently of the Minister for Education and Science and his Department in taking its decisions, the Deputy will appreciate that it would not be appropriate for me to intervene in such decisions.
