Vol. 569 No. 1

Written Answers. - Juvenile Offenders.

Jan O'Sullivan

Ceist:

20 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the total number of juvenile liaison officers in the Garda at the latest date for which figures are available; his plans to extend the scheme in view of the proven success of it in dealing with juvenile offenders; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17111/03]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that there are 93 juvenile liaison officers within the Garda Síochána. In addition, a superintendent is director of the Garda juvenile diversion programme, and two sergeants and two inspectors work with the programme.

I am further informed that the continuing human and other resource implications of the Children Act 2001, including JLO numbers, are the subject of review by the Garda Síochána.
