Vol. 569 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Michael Noonan

Ceist:

84 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has received the report from the Office of Public Works on the state of the prefabricated accommodation at St. Nessan's primary school, Mungret, County Limerick; the action he intends taking to ensure that the dangerous prefabricated buildings at the school are replaced by appropriate permanent accommodation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17280/03]

The Office of Public Works, together with a structural engineer, are currently examining the situation at St. Nessan's primary school, Mungret. A full report on the structural condition of the prefabs is expected in the next few days. Any works required to deal with the immediate safety issues will be funded from the Department's contingency fund which is in place to deal with emergencies such as this.

The proposed large-scale building project for St Nessan's primary school is listed in section 6 of the 2003 school building programme which I published on my Department's website at www.education.ie. This proposed project is at an advanced stage of architectural planning and has been assigned a band 2 rating by my Department in accordance with the published criteria for prioritising large-scale projects. The timing of when projects listed in section 6 and other sections of the school building programme can progress to tender and construction will depend on the budgetary allocation for 2004 and subsequent years and the priority afforded to each project by reference to the band rating.
