Adjournment Debate Matters.

An Leas-Cheann Comhairle:

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given under Standing Order 21 and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Deenihan – the need for Dúchas to review its policy of the chemical clearance of rhododendrons in Killarney National Park because of the resulting environmental damage and the growing export potential for rhododendron shoots; (2) Deputy Allen – the loss of over 100 jobs at the Flextronic plant, Dublin Hill, Cork; (3) Deputy O'Dowd – to ask the Minister for Health and Children to institute an inquiry into the reason for the high number of symphysiotomies carried out in the Lourdes hospital, Drogheda; (4) Deputy Seán Ryan – the urgent need for the Minister for Education and Science to respond favourably to the request from parents of second level students in Donabate/Portrane, County Dublin, for a bus service to the post-primary schools in Malahide, Portmarnock and Baldoyle, County Dublin; (5) Deputy Finian McGrath – the case of the Miami Five – the five Cubans who were trying to stop Miami-based groups carrying out violent actions against the people of Cuba and the need for international support for their case; (6) Deputy McHugh – the need to ensure the mainstreaming of CE jobs in the interim to lift the capping on CE positions within the IWA so as to avoid the imminent closure of many day centres; (7) Deputy McGinley – chun a fhiafraí den Aire Tuaithe, Pobail agus Gaeltachta, cén straitéis tarrthála atá aige le 200 post i dtionscail Comerama (Dún na nGall) a shábháil a ndeachaigh glacadóir isteach ann Déardaoin seo caite; (8) Deputy Rabbitte – the urgent need to provide adequate accommodation for the nursing service at Millbrook Lawns Health Centre, Tallaght; (9) Deputy Crawford – to urge the Minister for Health and Children to take immediate steps to have Monaghan General Hospital put back on call as this is the first anniversary of the hospital being taken off call; (10) Deputy English – to ask the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment to establish a task force immediately for Navan, County Meath, in view of the latest announcement that 230 jobs are to go in the Navan Carpets factory; (11) Deputy Crowe – the ongoing crisis in accommodation and facilities in Scoil Treasa, Ballycullen Avenue, Firhouse; (12) Deputy O'Sullivan – the need for the Defence Forces to hold a full inquiry into the circumstances of the killing of Able Seaman Brian Gorey aboard the LE Eithne in April 2001 and the need for a full review of the rules of behaviour for personnel and supervisory systems aboard vessels in light of matters disclosed during the recent trial arising from his death; (13) Deputy Ó Caoláin – the need for the restoration of the accident and emergency unit at Monaghan General Hospital, which has been off-call for emergencies for exactly one year today, 1 July 2003, and the need for the Minister for Health and Children to outline to the Dáil the implications of this axing of an essential service for other hospitals both within the region and throughout the State; (14) Deputy Sargent – the need for the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government draw up rules to deal with and investigate allegations of pressure being exerted on an anti-dump group at Kilconnell in east County Galway by a developer who allegedly offered the chairperson of the group €50,000 to withdraw his opposition to the landfill proposal; (15) Deputy Ó Snodaigh - the need for the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform to meet with the Garda Commissioner to agree measures to ensure that existing community policing fora have the confidence of community groups and to address the perceived failure of the Garda to stem or reduce anti-social behaviour, drug dealing and car theft in areas where these policing fora are in existence, such as Rialto and the south inner city; (16) Deputy Fiona O'Malley – the future of the Irish film industry; (17) Deputy Broughan – the urgent need to provide core funding for the TARGET Community Development Group in Donaghmede, Dublin 13; and (18) Deputy Upton – the failure of the Garda to respond to the concerns of an elderly lady (details supplied) who was wrongly accused of shoplifting.

The matters raised by Deputies O'Malley, Rabbitte and McGinley have been selected for discussion.
