Vol. 570 No. 2

Written Answers. - Residential Institutions Redress Board.

John Deasy

Ceist:

262 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of interim compensation payments that have issued by the Residential Institutions Redress Board to people in Waterford City and County. [18362/03]

The Residential Institutions Redress Board is an independent body established under the terms of the Residential Institutions Redress Act 2002. Section 10 of the Act provides that the redress board may make an interim award to an applicant, up to a maximum of €10,000, having regard to the health and age of the applicant, providing it is probable that an award that is equal to or greater than the amount of the interim award will be made in respect of the applicant. Section 28 of the Redress Act 2002 prohibits the release of any information in relation to individual awards, thus protecting the confidentiality of both applicants and the board. However, I am aware that on its website www.rirb.ie the redress board has stated that to date it has issued a total of 12 interim awards.
