Vol. 570 No. 2

Written Answers. - Crime Levels.

Seán Crowe

Ceist:

478 Mr. Crowe asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to a dramatic increase in the amount of anti-social behaviour, underage drinking and house break-ins occurring in the basin area of the Royal Canal bank since the full-time park ranger was withdrawn from the area; and if extra Garda resources will be provided to deal with this increasing problem bedevilling a terrified local community. [18291/03]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that since 1 April 2003 seven incidents of public disorder and two incidents of burglary have been recorded in the area of Royal Canal Bank – St. Peter's Court. Culprits have been made amenable for one of the burglaries, while the other is currently being investigated.

I am informed that the incidents of public disorder refer to youths drinking in the park at the Royal Canal Bank. The names and addresses of offenders drinking in these public areas have been recorded and Dublin City Council have been notified so as to enable notices to be issued under the Dublin Corporation (Prohibition of Consumption of Intoxicating Liquor on Streets and in Public Places) Bye Laws 2000. Since April 2003, 15 such notices have been applied for. The area is already the subject of daily patrols by regular and community gardaí, and I am assured that attention will continue to be paid to the area.
