Vol. 570 No. 2

Written Answers. - Witness Protection Programme.

Joe Costello

Ceist:

498 Mr. Costello asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the origins of the witness support scheme; the number of people on the scheme each year since its inception; and the cost of the scheme each year. [18664/03]

John Dennehy

Ceist:

511 Mr. Dennehy asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of persons currently under the care of the witness protection programme; and if he will make a statement on the operation of the programme. [18821/03]

I propose to answer Questions Nos. 498 and 511 together.

I am answering the first question on the basis that the Deputy is referring to the witness security programme. This programme was established in 1997 in response to the activities of organised criminal gangs to facilitate those persons who are prepared to give evidence against alleged offenders. It operates under the direct control and administration of the Garda Commissioner.

For reasons which the Deputies will appreciate, it is established policy not to disclose information relating to the numbers of persons included in the witness security programme or to disclose procedures relating to its operation.

The cost of the witness security programme has been as follows:
