Ceist:

314 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of gardaí available for foot patrol to cover the area bounded by Phibsboro Road-Blessington Street, Western Way and Mountjoy Street, Dublin 7; the number of community gardaí assigned to this area; and if the garda in charge of the community gardaí has met the residents association representing this area as requested by the residents. I am informed by the Garda authorities, who are responsible for the day to day allocation of resources, including personnel, that the area bounded by Phibsboro Road-Blessington Street, Western Way and Mountjoy Street, Dublin 7, is policed by the Bridewell and Mountjoy Garda stations. Local Garda management is satisfied that there are sufficient personnel to cover the area bounded by the locations concerned.

Four community gardaí cover the area concerned, two from the Bridewell and two from Mountjoy Garda stations. In addition, all gardaí assigned to Mountjoy and the Bridewell Garda stations have a responsibility, inter alia, to deal with community policing matters as they arise. There are four residents' groups in the area and these have met with gardaí on a regular basis. The sergeant in charge of community policing in the area is a recent appointment. He has already met some of the residents' groups and intends meeting the rest in the coming weeks. Garda management will continue to appraise the policing and administrative strategy employed in the Mountjoy and Bridewell Garda stations with a view to ensuring that an effective Garda service is maintained.

I have been assured by the Garda authorities that the situation will be kept under review and when additional personnel next become available the needs of Mountjoy and the Bridewell Garda stations will be fully considered within the overall context of the needs of Garda divisions throughout the country.
