Vol. 571 No. 1

Written Answers. - Apprenticeship Training.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

256 Mr. Ring asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if employers are obliged to pay the union rates of wages during an employee's apprenticeship period; and if there are checks by the State on this issue to ensure that apprentices are being paid correctly. [20299/03]

Employers who come within scope of the joint labour committee and registered employment systems covered by the Industrial Relations Acts 1946 to 2001 are obliged to pay apprenticeship and training rates as provided for in the various orders and agreements. Labour inspectors of my Department monitor the conditions of employment and pay rates provided for under the joint labour committee and registered employment agreement systems. The registered employment agreement system also provides for direct complaint to the Labour Court.
