Vol. 571 No. 1

Written Answers. - Remediation Programme.

James Breen

Ceist:

360 Mr. J. Breen asked the Minister for Finance when the asbestos will be removed and the ceilings replaced at Kilkishen national school; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20110/03]

An asbestos survey of the school in question was carried out on 21 April 2001 by consultants commissioned by the Office of Public Works. A copy of the report was provided to the school principal. The presence of asbestos was confirmed in the flue pipe and boiler rope seals, ceiling tiles, toilet cisterns and between the brick and ridge cap on the gable wall.

The asbestos removal works were originally included in the summer 2002 programme to facilitate the installation of new windows. Confirmation regarding the proposed window removal/replacement was not received so it was decided to proceed with the asbestos removal works in the boiler house only.

It is intended, subject to availability of funds, to remove the remaining asbestos containing materials which are not hazardous at present in next year's summer holidays works programme. The condition of the materials will be monitored in the meantime.
