Vol. 571 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Cecilia Keaveney

Ceist:

370 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Finance the position in relation to the extension of a Garda station (details supplied) in County Donegal; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20452/03]

The two Garda stations in the Inishowen peninsula, Burnfoot and Buncrana, are due for refurbishment. However, there is a need to have one of the stations operating with cell accommodation at any one time. Accordingly, a strategy has been agreed with the local Garda Síochána whereby Burnfoot will be refurbished first. It is proposed to place a contract for the works at Burnfoot Garda station at the end of 2003. It is anticipated that those works will be completed before end 2004 at which time works at Buncrana Garda station could commence.

I am advised by the Commissioners of Public Works that tender documents for the proposed improvement works at Burnfoot Garda station are currently being processed. Subject to the planning consultation currently with the local authority, it is proposed to go to tender for this project early November 2003, with a view to contractor commencing works on site early 2004. The timescale for completion of works will be six months from the date the contractor commences works on site.
