508 Mr. J. Breen asked the Minister for Education and Science when Doona national school will be approved for six new classrooms, a resource room, computer room, secretary's office, principal's office and toilets; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20104/03]

Minister for Education and Science (Mr. Dempsey)

The Deputy may wish to contact officials in the school planning section of my Department who will assist in clarifying the issue and provide any available information.

Minister for Education and Science (Mr. Dempsey)

The proposed large-scale building project for Scoil Seanaín Naofa, Clonlara, is listed in section 7 of the 2003 school building programme which is published on my Department's website at www.education.ie. This proposed project is at stage 3 of architectural planning – detailed plans/costs. It has been assigned a band 2 rating by my Department in accordance with the published criteria for prioritising large-scale projects. Projects listed in sections 6 and 7 will not be authorised to progress beyond their current stage of architectural planning at this time.

Budgetary provisions in 2004 and subsequent years will determine the rate of progression to tender and construction of these projects in conjunction with the band rating individually assigned. In the meantime, individual schools should, as appropriate, use their devolved grant to deal with any urgent health and safety works.

513 Mr. J. Breen asked the Minister for Education and Science when Ennis national school will be approved for a new 24 classroom school; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20109/03]

The timing of when individual projects may progress to architectural planning will depend on the budgetary provision for 2004 and subsequent years, the rate of progress of existing projects in architectural planning and the priority afforded to each project by reference to the published criteria for prioritising large-scale building projects. The annual school building programme will outline details of projects for which funding is to be made available.

Grant aid has been provided towards accommodation improvements at Ennis national school in recent years. In 2001 grant-aid was provided for air conditioning in a computer room and for the purchase of eight temporary classrooms and in June 2002 my Department authorised grant aid of over €200,000 to fund health and safety works.

515 Mr. J. Breen asked the Minister for Education and Science when Meelick national school will be repaired; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20112/03]

In 2001 my Department authorised the board of management of the school to appoint a consultant to report on the works required at the school. In order to facilitate any proposed works the school has to acquire additional land adjacent to the existing school site. When the site acquisition is finalised the consultant will be in a position to prepare and submit his report. On receipt of the consultant's report my Department will give further consideration to the school's application.
