Vol. 571 No. 1

Written Answers. - Physical Education.

David Stanton

Ceist:

665 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Education and Science further to Parliamentary Question No. 15 of 10 April 2003, the 200 schools where the junior cycle non-examination syllabus has been introduced to date; the schools where the syllabus will be introduced in September 2004 and in September 2005 respectively; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20968/03]

A revised syllabus at junior cycle for physical education (non-examination) is being introduced to schools on a phased basis from September 2003. My Department issued a circular letter to all second level schools inviting those schools choosing to offer the revised syllabus in September 2003 to complete a form and return it to Mayo Education Centre, Westport Road, Castlebar, County Mayo. A support service in Mayo Education Centre will offer a comprehensive programme of inservice for those physical education teachers participating in the first year of implementation.

My Department has not yet invited responses from schools choosing to introduce the revised physical education syllabus in September 2004 or in September 2005. A list of the schools that indicated their intention to introduce the revised physical education syllabus in September 2003 is being compiled and will be forwarded directly to the Deputy.
