Vol. 571 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Emmet Stagg

Ceist:

706 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will authorise the completion of the architectural planning process in respect of the required extension to Maynooth post-primary school, Maynooth, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21193/03]

The proposed large-scale building project for Maynooth post-primary school, Maynooth, County Kildare is listed in section 7 of the 2003 school building programme which is published on my Department's website at www.education.ie. This proposed project is at stage 3 of architectural planning, developed sketch scheme. It has been assigned a 'band 3' rating by my Department in accordance with the published criteria for prioritising large-scale projects. Projects listed in sections 6 and 7 will not be authorised to progress beyond their current stage of architectural planning at this time.

Budgetary provisions in 2004 and subsequent years will determine the rate of progression to tender and construction of these projects in conjunction with the band rating individually assigned.

Ceist:

707 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will sanction works as detailed in parliamentary question, reference No. 10485/03, which are required for the Salesian College, Celbridge, County Kildare, from his post-primary contingency fund; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21194/03]

An application for grant aid towards improvement works has been received from the management authorities of the Salesian College, Celbridge, County Kildare. The application is being examined at present in the school planning section of my Department and, as soon as this examination is completed, a decision on the matter will issue to the management authority.

The 2003 capital programme has been published and my Department does not intend to allow further large-scale projects into architectural planning during 2003. The timing of when individual projects can progress to architectural planning will depend on the budgetary provision for 2004 and subsequent years, the rate of progress with existing projects in architectural planning and the priority afforded to each project by reference to the published criteria for prioritising large-scale building projects.

In the meantime, my Department will continue to manage the contingency sum for emergencies that is set out in the programme to deal, as best as possible, with the most urgent needs in schools.
