Vol. 571 No. 1

Written Answers. - Ferry Travel.

Brendan Smith

Ceist:

765 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources if, in view of the substantial costs of ferry travel between Ireland and Britain, more competition will be actively encouraged for this route; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21256/03]

I believe that competition in markets drives down costs and provides choice to consumers. A number of competing private sector shipping companies provide shipping services between Ireland and Britain. While these companies have been innovative in their provision of jumbo ferries, fast ferries and dedicated container ships to serve the Irish economy, I consider that there are always opportunities for more innovative products. Having a flourishing competitive market is one way to assist.

There is at present no lack of shipping capacity on the sea routes serving Ireland and competition exists between ship operators, fast and conventional ferries, ports and port terminals.

Irish Ferries' recent acquisition of one of the world's largest ferries, for service on the Irish Sea, is one indication of the dynamism of the Irish shipping sector.

The Government is fully committed to the development of our maritime sector and to the maintenance of a competitive market. Targeted fiscal reliefs, such as the recently introduced tonnage tax, are used to create a favourable climate for ship operators. The Irish shipping sector has its own dedicated development agency, the Irish Maritime Development Office.
