Vol. 571 No. 1

Written Answers. - Hospital Practices.

Paudge Connolly

Ceist:

843 Mr. Connolly asked the Minister for Health and Children if the forthcoming inquiry into the gynaecological practice of a person (details supplied) will be a public inquiry, encompassing all aspects of this person's practice and not merely caesarean hysterectomies carried out by this person; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19937/03]

Fergus O'Dowd

Ceist:

958 Mr. O'Dowd asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will institute a sworn public inquiry into all aspects of the Neary case of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda. [20629/03]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 843 and 958 together.

On 23 September 2003 I met with representatives from Patient Focus and listened carefully to the views expressed by the group. Arising from these discussions, and in light of the recent report and findings of the Medical Council, I accept that a further inquiry is required in this case. I am considering a number of options in relation to the scope and format of such an inquiry and I will be bringing proposals to Government as a priority in this regard. I will be meeting again with Patient Focus in October to review progress.
