Vol. 571 No. 1

Written Answers. - Dublin-Monaghan Bombings.

Finian McGrath

Ceist:

1093 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the fact that many members of the public are concerned that previous Ministers were involved in cover-ups in relation to the Dublin-Monaghan Bombings and in other issues relating to collusion; and if he has found evidence of same. [19578/03]

I am not aware of the basis of the suggestion that many members of the public have formed that opinion. As the Deputy is aware, an independent commission of inquiry has been established to undertake a thorough examination, involving fact finding and assessment of all aspects of the bombings and their sequel, including the facts, circumstances, causes and perpetrators of, inter alia, the Dublin and Monaghan bombings, the nature, adequacy and extent of the Garda investigation, and the reasons no prosecution took place.

Mr. Justice Henry Barron, sole member of the commission, is due to report shortly and, in the circumstances, I do not believe it would be appropriate for either the Deputy or myself to seek to pre-empt his findings.
