Vol. 571 No. 1

Written Answers. - Stardust Disaster.

Finian McGrath

Ceist:

1148 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the fact that there was combustible materials in the roof space at the time of the Stardust fire in 1981; and if the attention of the experts was drawn to this new information at the tribunal. [20050/03]

As the Deputy will be aware, the Government of the day appointed a tribunal of inquiry to hold a public inquiry into the disaster at the Stardust in 1981. The tribunal of inquiry presented its report to the Minister for the Environment on 30 June 1982. I understand that, as part of their investigation, the tribunal considered the question of a fire accidentally started in the roofspace and that this matter is dealt with at page 221 of the tribunal's report.

The Deputy will also be aware that recently representatives from my Department, from the Department of Health and Children and from the Department of the Environment and Local Government have held a number of meetings with representatives of the Stardust Victims Committee at which it has been stated that any new evidence brought forward by the committee in relation to the cause of the fire would be examined. My Department awaits receipt of documentation in relation to any new evidence.
