Vol. 571 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Remuneration.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

1189 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he is satisfied with the procedure adopted in the serving of a retirement order on a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny on 14 July 1994; if all benefit payments due to them for the period they were incapacitated and still a member of the force have been made; if all benefits or pension entitlement due to this person have been or are being made; if the complaints made by this person were fully investigated at the time; his views on whether there is a need for an independent review of the case; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20600/03]

The case of the person concerned goes back a number of years. The position with regard to the payment during periods of sick leave prior to his retirement and his pension entitlements on retirement was clarified in a letter from the then Minister's private secretary to the person's wife on 30 November 1998.

I have asked the Garda authorities for a report in the matter. I understand that the information requested is not readily available. The relevant files have to be located from Garda archives. I will write to the Deputy, in due course, if the report from the Garda authorities provides me with any relevant information which goes beyond the content of the above-mentioned letter of 30 November 1998.
