Vol. 571 No. 1

Written Answers. - Personal Public Service Number.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

1380 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Social and Family Affairs when a PPS number will issue to a person (details supplied) in County Kildare; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [20977/03]

The personal public service number, PPS number, is the citizen's unique reference number for all dealings with Government Departments and public bodies.

A PPS number is issued to children at birth. Adults who do not already have a PPS number must apply for a number at one of the Department's local offices. Applicants must supply documents supporting their identity when applying.

Most Irish nationals born since 1971 should have a PPS number and any customer in insurable employment at any time since 1979 should have one. In this case, despite a thorough search, an existing PPS No has not been found. No application for a PPS No has been received from this person. The person concerned should bring relevant documentation, including their long birth certificate, photographic identity and confirmation of address to the local office when making an application for a PPS number as this will help speed up the process.
