Vol. 571 No. 3

Written Answers. - Schools Refurbishment.

Denis Naughten

Ceist:

128 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will provide an update regarding Parliamentary Question No. 388 of 29 January 2003; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21599/03]

The position as outlined in my answer to Parliamentary Question No. 388 of 29 January 2003 remains unchanged.

In the meantime, individual schools should, as appropriate, use their devolved grant to deal with any urgent health and safety works.

Ceist:

129 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Education and Science the status of the redevelopment of St. Mary's Hall, Boyle community school, County Roscommon; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21600/03]

Adjacent to the new community college in Boyle, is a sports complex located on lands owned by the trustees of the parish. County Roscommon VEC has applied to my Department for funding to have this complex refurbished for school use.

Before such an investment can be considered, it will be necessary for the VEC to enter into a long-term leasing agreement for the facility with the parish. To that end, the Office of the Chief State Solicitor, acting on behalf of my Department, and the VEC's solicitor, are discussing the details of the make-up of the lease agreement. My Department is awaiting the outcome of these discussions.

The timing of when individual projects can progress to architectural planning will depend on the budgetary provision for 2004 and subsequent years, the rate of progress of existing projects in architectural planning and the priority afforded to each project by reference to the published criteria for prioritising large-scale building projects.
