Vol. 571 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

49 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason part-time and substitute teachers who were involved in voluntary supervision were not given the once off payment as a token gesture for their efforts similar to other teachers; the number of part-time and substitute teachers who were excluded from this payment; and the cost of issuing them with the once off payment. [21491/03]

The arrangements for the payment of back money for supervision and substitution for the school year 2001-02 were agreed with the Teachers Union of Ireland and the Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland. The exceptional arrangement had regard to the fact that agreement was reached at the end of the school year and was designed to effect early payment. The arrangements which applied for that year only provided for payment to permanent, temporary wholetime or eligible part-time teachers who were certified as having engaged in voluntary substitution-supervision over and above timetabled hours on the basis that they demonstrated a willingness to co-operate with and assisted in the provision of supervision and substitution during the school year 2001-02. I have no details of the numbers or cost involved.
