Vol. 571 No. 4

Written Answers. - Telecommunications Services.

Jackie Healy-Rae

Ceist:

331 Mr. Healy-Rae asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources when he intends to bring broadband to Kenmare, County Kerry such as T1, Multiple T1 or ideally a T3 level in view of the fact that a company (details supplied) in County Kerry intends to extend its Kenmare office which at present employs 45 full time staff and expects to employ in the next 12 months approximately 100 staff; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22118/03]

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 739, answered on 30 September 2003.

Recent developments in the telecommunications market indicate that broadband uptake is increasing in all areas of the country. This increase is due to a number of factors, not least of which is the reduction of prices to consumers and businesses in recent months. I have always believed that if companies price their products at attractive rates, the consumers will respond accordingly. Experience in recent months has confirmed that.

Following a set of policy directions that I issued to the Commission for Communications Regulation earlier this year, flat-rate Internet access call origination, or FRIACO, has now been introduced. Telecommunications service providers are aware that lower prices drive demand, and the resultant increase in demand for services will drive the expansion of the areas in which broadband coverage is offered.
