Vol. 571 No. 4

Written Answers. - Taxi Hardship Panel.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

440 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Transport if his attention has been drawn to the fact that persons who have contributed to social insurance are likely to lose out on access to compensation under the Taxi Hardship Panel compared to those who made no such contributions and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21904/03]

This matter has been drawn to the attention of my Department in the course of discussions with taxi representative groups regarding the implementation of the recommendations of the Taxi Hardship Panel report. That report has recommended the establishment of a scheme to provide payments to individual taxi licence holders who fall into one of six categories that the panel assessed as having suffered extreme personal financial hardship arising from taxi liberalisation. The issue is being examined, together with a range of other matters raised in the course of the discussions, and I expect that my Department will be responding to the representative groups on all of these matters in the near future.
