Vol. 571 No. 4

Written Answers. - Official Engagements.

Seán Ryan

Ceist:

452 Mr. S. Ryan asked the Minister for Transport if he will report on the meeting of 12 February 2003 with the Irish Air Line Pilots Association regarding the implications of a report adopted by the European Parliament (PE 315705A50263/2002). If he will undertake to debate the merits of the proposal at the EU Council of Transport Ministers meeting on the basis of the latest scientific and medical evidence available to him in the interest of aviation safety, and if he will seek amendments on the basis of this information. [22289/03]

My meeting with the Irish Airline Pilots Association in February of this year gave an opportunity for IALPA to express their views with regard to the implications of a report adopted by the European Parliament in 2002. I took note of the concerns they expressed and informed the association that the Irish Aviation Authority, which is responsible for the safety of Irish aviation, is examining the proposals, and will give their view on the completion of their analysis.

The day-to-day oversight of aviation safety falls within the responsibility of the Irish Aviation Authority. In so far as this proposal may lead to legislative changes, I can assure the Deputy that I always give the highest priority to safety matters.

This matter is not on the agenda for the Council of Transport Ministers meeting.
