Vol. 571 No. 4

Written Answers. - Explosives Legislation.

Gay Mitchell

Ceist:

481 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform further to Parliamentary Question No. 1019 of 30 January 2002, if his Department has made progress in reviewing the legislation relating to explosives, including the promised review of the law and the policy on the regulation and control of fireworks; if he has direct proposals to stop the daily scourge of explosive devices being discharged, terrifying particularly senior citizens, those living alone, and also causing severe distress to many animals; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22076/03]

The review of the Explosives Act 1875 is ongoing. In regard to fireworks, I wish to inform the Deputy that I have no plans to liberalise the long-standing policy of granting importation licences only for organised fireworks displays conducted by professional and experienced operators.
