Vol. 571 No. 4

Written Answers. - Inland Fisheries.

Joan Burton

Ceist:

151 Ms Burton asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources the main features of the review of the inland fisheries sector announced by him on 21 August 2003; the person by whom the review will be car ried out; when it is expected to be completed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22041/03]

My Department has sought tenders from suitably qualified consultants by 6 October 2003 to undertake a review that will deliver a root and branch examination of the State's role and objectives in the inland fisheries sector. The consultants will be required to evaluate the adequacy of the current model for the governance of inlands fisheries sector; to define the current relationship between the Government, the Department(s) and the inland fisheries sector and suggest new more effective models; and to recommend a structure which will contribute to the optimum development of the inland fisheries resource in Ireland.

The review is to be completed in two stages over six months from commissioning. It is expected that stage one will be completed in January 2004. The review team will be expected to consult widely with the effected stakeholders and I have ensured that arrangements are in place to provide for a partnership approach to any restructuring of the organisations involved.
