Vol. 571 No. 4

Written Answers. - European Network and Information Security Agency.

Mary Upton

Ceist:

171 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources the position regarding proposals to base the European Network and Information Security Agency at the digital hub in Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22047/03]

The European Commission following on European Council resolutions on network and information security has proposed the establishment of a European Network and Information Security Agency which is to act as a European centre of expertise on network and information security issues.

A general approach on a common position was agreed at Council in June this year and it is at First Reading stage in the European Parliament at present. The spring Council has mandated that the agency commence its work in January 2004 and work is continuing to meet this deadline. There has been no decision to date as to how the location of the agency will be determined.
