I am informed by the Garda authorities that the seizure details relate to the principal drugs misused in Ireland and would constitute over 98% of all offences and seizure data. Other drugs occasionally seized include benzodiazepines, psilocin/psilocybin and methadone. Due to the small number of seizures it is difficult to determine a precise value for these drugs.
The above seizure details are drawn from the Garda Commissioner's annual crime report for the years 2000 and 2001. The statistics for the year 2002 are not yet available.
In relation to a breakdown of seizure data per county, the annual crime report provides details of the number of drug offences where proceedings have been instituted in the particular year, broken down by Garda division. Statistics are not maintained in such a way as to facilitate the breakdown of seizure data by county. Copies of these reports are available in the Oireachtas Library.
