Vol. 572 No. 1

Written Answers. - Insurance Industry.

Ruairí Quinn

Ceist:

93 Mr. Quinn asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she has received representations from persons (details supplied) in Dublin 4; the actions she proposes to take to ensure that householders in this area are not discriminated against by the insurance companies for which she has responsibility; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [22564/03]

My concern in implementing the insurance reform programme is reducing the overall cost of insurance to consumers and business. The pricing and underwriting of insurance is a matter for individual insurance companies and EU law prevents direct intervention in the matter. The Irish Financial Services Regulatory Authority is responsible for the regulation of financial services, including insurance products and services, since 1 May 2003, and I believe the attention of the consumer director of the IFSRA has already been drawn to the matter to which the Deputy refers.

The findings of the flood review group are due to be published shortly by the Office of Public Works, and these will be of interest to victims of floods and insurers alike.
