Vol. 572 No. 1

Written Answers. - Bovine Disease Controls.

Billy Timmins

Ceist:

103 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the cost to the Irish and European Exchequer of BSE, due to culling policy, for the years 1999 and to date in 2003; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22601/03]

In Ireland the gross cost of BSE whole herd depopulation in 1999 was €12.06 million, including €8.715 million in respect of compensation for farmers whose herds have been depopulated, and €3.342 million in respect of ancillary expenses such as slaughter, transport, rendering, disposal, etc. This amount was offset by an EU contribution of 70% of the cost of compensation, i.e. €6.1 million.

In 2003 to 30 September, expenditure on depopulation amounted to €22.49 million, including €16.35 million in respect of compensation to farmers and €6.14 million in respect of ancillary expenses. As with 1999, expenditure on compensation to farmers in 2003 will be offset by EU co-funding at a rate of 70%.
