Vol. 572 No. 2

Written Answers. - Teaching Qualifications.

Cecilia Keaveney

Ceist:

120 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education and Science the course of action available to a person holding an honours degree to get into a teacher training course, if they are not in receipt of a leaving certificate and considering that they are a mature student; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22702/03]

The current position is that, as part of the minimum academic requirements specified by my Department for entry to primary teacher training, all candidates, including school leavers, mature students and university graduates must have achieved a minimum standard in the leaving certificate examination or an approved equivalent including the appropriate level in Irish.

In the case of post-primary teaching, candidates should contact either the Higher Diploma in Education Application Centre, Tower House, Eglinton St, Galway or the Education Department, Trinity College, which is responsible for admission to the higher diploma in education.
