Vol. 572 No. 2

Written Answers. - Health Board Services.

James Breen

Ceist:

151 Mr. J. Breen asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will provide the remainder of the funding for a project (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22705/03]

Responsibility for the provision of health services in County Clare rests with the Mid-Western Health Board. My Department has been informed by the board that a voluntary organisation, Clarecastle Day Centre Limited, has proposed to build a day centre adjoining the existing centre, specifically for Alzheimer's sufferers. Plans have been drawn up by the committee of this voluntary organisation, and planning permission was applied for and approved.

The board has advised that dementia services in Clare are currently under review and that a number of different options have been, or are in the process of being, proposed. Many factors, including funding, will be considered in relation to any proposed developments.

The Mid-Western Health Board has further advised that an in-patient dementia unit was opened in St. Joseph's Hospital in Ennis. The unit has 12 in-patient beds and includes respite care as part of its services.
