Vol. 572 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Investigations.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

187 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform further to Parliamentary Question No. 1188 of 30 September 2003, if on either of the dates of the arrests, there were injuries or evidence of assault to the arrested person; if this information was brought to the attention of the authorities at the time; the action taken; if his attention has been drawn to the medical evidence certifying injury; if it is normal in such circumstances to arrest the injured party; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22772/03]

My reply to Question No. 1118 of 30 September dealt with the legal basis on which the arrests were made. As I indicated in my reply, the gardaí in both instances acted on a court order which they are obliged by law to do. The Deputy will appreciate the difficulties faced by the gardaí in deaIing with matters of the nature involved in this case. I do not believe in the circumstances that it would be appropriate for me to go into any further detail other than to say that the Garda authorities are satisfied that the gardaí involved behaved appropriately at all times.
