Vol. 572 No. 5

Adjournment Debate. - Traffic Calming Measures.

Cecilia Keaveney

Ceist:

146 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Transport if he will include the issue of having traffic calming made more visible through both the use of reflective bands at lower level and lighting at a higher level in the context of the review of speed signs, traffic calming and other road safety measures; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23789/03]

Section 38 of the Road Traffic Act 1994 provides that a road authority may, in the interests of the safety and convenience of road users, provide such traffic claming measures as it considers desirable in respect of public roads in its charge. While decisions relating to the deployment of traffic calming measures are a matter for road authorities, section 38(6) provides that the Minister may issue general guidelines in relation to traffic calming and that road authorities must have regard to any such guidelines in providing traffic calming measures.

In May a document entitled, Traffic Management Guidelines, was published. It was prepared jointly by the Dublin Transportation Office under the aegis of my Department and the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government. It contains general guidance relating to traffic calming developments, including advice relation to the illumination and conspicuity of such developments. A copy of this guidelines manual is available in the Oireachtas Library.
