Vol. 572 No. 5

Adjournment Debate Matters.

Acting Chairman:

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given under Standing Order 21 and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Ó Fearghaíl – the need to provide additional resources for Scoil Phadraig Naofa, Athy, County Kildare; (2) Deputy Hogan – the need for the Tánaiste to intervene with FÁS to prevent the termination of many community employment schemes arising from the reduction in financing of these programmes in 2003, pending the completion of the review of the scheme and to take account of the important work of the schemes in respect of activities at resource centres, health facilities, voluntary, sporting, cultural and environmental projects and the consequent loss of gainful training and participation for the individuals concerned; (3) Deputy Deenihan – the need for the Minister to conduct a special investigation into the alarmingly high levels of radon gas in the Castleisland and Tralee areas of County Kerry, where the highest levels of radon ever identified in Ireland were found recently; (4) Deputy Michael Moynihan – the level of investment by Departments and State agencies on printing costs for glossy brochure-type publications and annual reports; (5) Deputy Costello – the need for the Government to intervene and help to save the Cricklewood homeless centre in London; (6) Deputy McGinley – the appointment of a liquidator to the MDR factory on the Gweedore industrial estate and the loss of 40 jobs; (7) Deputy Morgan – the necessity for the Minister to ensure, in the light of the facts contained in the recently published housing statistics bulletin, that appropriate accommodation is pro vided for the differing sizes of family units and, specifically, to put in place a strategy to end the unacceptable situation where it is virtually impossible for single people, particularly single males, to be housed by local authorities; (8) Deputy Cowley – while welcoming the publication of the expert report on radiotherapy services in Ireland, if the Minister will explain the reason there is not an immediate commitment to radiotherapy units for the south-east, the mid-west and cover for the north-west; (9) Deputy Eamon Ryan – the proposal from the National Roads Authority for a €300 million upgrade of the M50 motorway network, given that this project was seen as the last priority for investment in the Dublin Transportation Office plan, A Platform for Change, and given that funding has not yet been made available for the myriad of public transport projects also proposed in the plan; (10) Deputy Gregory – the policy of non-collection of household waste which has resulted in an escalating crisis in the Dublin area.

The matters raised by Deputies Costello, Ó Fearghaíl, Gregory and McGinley have been selected for discussion.
